Preparing Your Dog for Life With a Baby, Toddler or Young Family

Premium in-home support for couples and families who want clear structure, safe boundaries, calm dog behaviour, and real peace of mind before or after a new baby arrives.

Whether you already have a family dog, are expecting your first baby, have recently brought a baby home, have a toddler in the house, are bringing home a new puppy, or are taking on a rescue dog or family member’s dog, the work is built around safety, structure, and practical daily living.

Why a Baby Can Change Dog Behaviour

A new baby changes the rhythm of the home. Crying, feeding times, broken sleep, visitors, prams, movement, toys, nappies, baby equipment, new smells, less owner attention, and changes to routine can all affect how a dog feels and behaves.

Some dogs become unsettled, overly excited, jealous, pushy, restless, noisy, clingy, overprotective, or too alert. Others may pace, whine, stare, block access, growl, become frustrated, or struggle to settle around the new pressure in the home.

In some breeds and individual dogs, baby crying, squealing, crawling, quick movement, or floor-level activity can also trigger arousal, chasing instinct, or prey-drive type behaviour. That is why the dog, the breed, the age, the history, the social skills, the emotional state, and the home environment all need to be assessed properly.

Safe Boundaries Before Problems Develop

The aim is not to exclude the dog from family life. The aim is to create a calm, safe and clearly structured home where the dog understands where they fit, how to settle, what is expected, and how to respond around the baby or child.

We look at resting areas, controlled spaces, doorways, furniture rules, feeding times, prams, visitors, baby movement, crying, floor time, supervision, routines, calm separation, and how to help the dog feel secure without confusion or mixed messages.

Whether you have an existing dog, a rescue dog, a new puppy, an adolescent dog, or you are taking on a dog through changing family circumstances, the plan is built around your home, your child’s safety, and the dog in front of us.

01

Baby Safety Comes First

Every decision is built around safe interaction, calm supervision, sensible separation when needed, and helping the dog understand clear limits around babies, toddlers and young children.

02

Dog Boundaries Are Created

We put structure in place so the dog is not guessing. That includes how the dog moves around the home, where the dog rests, when the dog is included, and how to prevent pushy, overexcited, intrusive or unsafe behaviour.

03

The Home Routine Is Rebuilt

Feeding the baby, changing nappies, baby floor time, visitors, carrying the baby, using the pram, and managing daily pressure points are all considered so the household works safely and practically.

What This Support Covers

Practical in-home guidance for real family life, helping you understand your dog properly and manage everyday situations with more confidence and less guesswork.

Preparing your dog before the baby arrives

If you are expecting a baby, the preparation should begin before the baby comes home. We help you put the changes in place early so the dog is already familiar with the new structure, new expectations, new equipment, and the changes to routine before the household pressure increases.

Supporting families who have already brought the baby home

If the baby is already home and your dog is showing signs of stress, overexcitement, whining, pacing, staring, frustration, unsettled behaviour, poor boundaries, or any worrying reaction, we help you create a safer and more controlled plan straight away.

Managing dogs around crying, movement and floor-level activity

Baby cries, squeals, crawling, waving arms, fast movement, toys, bouncing, and toddler unpredictability can affect dogs very differently. We look at how your dog responds to stimulation, what the dog finds difficult, and how to reduce risk while improving calm behaviour and owner control.

Helping with overfriendly, overexcited or intrusive behaviour

Not every concern is aggression. Some dogs are simply too excited, too enthusiastic, too full-on, too physical, or too unaware of their own size and energy. We work on calmness, distance, manners, boundaries, and safer inclusion so the dog does not overwhelm the baby or child.

Helping with nervous, reactive or more serious behaviour concerns

If your dog is growling, guarding, freezing, becoming tense, withdrawing, hypervigilant, frustrated, overly alert, reactive, or showing any behaviour that causes concern around a baby or child, the situation needs to be assessed properly. Safety comes first, and the plan is built around that.

Guidance for puppies, rescue dogs and newly introduced dogs

This support is also suited to families with young babies or toddlers who decide to bring home a puppy, adopt a rescue dog, or take on a family member’s dog. In those cases, the dog must be introduced into the household with clear structure, proper management, and sensible expectations from the beginning.

Teaching you what to do in everyday family situations

We help you understand what to do when feeding the baby, changing nappies, using the pram, carrying the baby through the house, settling the baby, allowing the baby to spend time on a blanket or mat on the floor, managing toddler movement, and keeping the dog safe, calm, and properly guided around it all.

Calm Guidance, Clear Structure & Peace of Mind

This is a premium one-to-one in-home service designed to help families feel safer, clearer, and more confident when managing dogs around babies, toddlers and young children.

Before You Book: Understanding Our Professional Dog Training Service

Learn how our in-home dog training approach is structured, personalised, and built around real behavioural results.

A Service for Those Who Truly Care

Clare Dog Training Ireland is designed for owners who want proper professional guidance, not generic advice or quick surface-level training. The service is built for people who genuinely want to understand their dog, improve behaviour, create structure in the home, and develop long-term control, communication, and confidence.

A Personalised, All-In-One Service

Every programme is tailored around your dog’s breed, age, temperament, history, home environment, family routine, and daily behaviour. Support can include puppy training, puppy raising and development, adult dog training, lead pulling, recall, overexcitement, reactivity, aggression, separation issues, poor boundaries, lack of focus, and wider behaviour problems.

No Quick Fixes, No Shortcuts

Proper dog training and behaviour work requires understanding what is happening, why it is happening, and how the dog is being managed in real life. The focus is on practical structure, calm handling, better engagement, improved communication, and realistic changes that can be maintained in the home and outside environment.

Support That Lasts a Lifetime

Lifetime follow-up support is included as standard. This means you are not left on your own after the visit. Continued guidance is available as your dog develops, as new situations arise, or as the training needs to be adjusted for puppy growth, adolescence, adult behaviour, household changes, or ongoing behavioural progress.

Don’t Just Take Our Word for It

Clare Dog Training Ireland works with families and dog owners across Ireland who need practical, real-world help in the environments where their dogs actually live and behave. The service is based on experience, structured assessment, clear communication, and professional in-home support for both dog and owner.

Understanding the Dog Behind the Behaviour

Reactivity, restlessness and overexcitement are often treated as problems on their own. In many dogs, they are signs of drive, instinct and frustration needing structure. Real behaviour work starts by understanding the dog, not just naming the behaviour.

"Our Approach: Structured, Balanced Dog Behaviour Work in Real Home Environments"

At Clare Dog Training Ireland, we are dedicated to a compassionate, professional dog training and behaviour-led approach that places your dog’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being at the core of all we do.

Our philosophy focuses on canine training that meets the environmental and instinctive needs of dogs, creating safe, structured home settings where they can gain clarity, confidence, and stability before navigating the wider world.

We work to help dogs adapt to the pressures and confusion of the modern pet home through practical, real-world dog behaviour work, free from rigid rules or limiting ideologies.

We firmly oppose one-sided movements that promote only one method, recognising that every dog is different and requires informed structure to achieve lasting success.

By working with fairness and clarity, we adapt to each dog’s individual needs, including puppy training and early development, focusing on communication, understanding, and guidance.

Our goal is to support both dogs and owners, building confident, well-socialised companions equipped for life in a human environment.

Puppy Training Through Play & Engagement

Play builds the relationship. When your puppy sees you as the most rewarding person to be with, recall, retrieving, staying close and choosing you naturally become part of the partnership.

"Developing Clear, Structured Relationships Between You and Your Dog"

Clare Dog Training Ireland's vision is realised by founder Philip Alain, an advanced professional behaviourist practitioner and master dog training instructor with decades of hands-on experience.

Philip's expertise ensures that every training programme is tailored to each dog's specific needs, fostering trust, respect, and clear communication.

Our mission extends beyond dog training; we provide owners with the knowledge and skills they need to effectively understand and communicate with their pets.

We help owners build deeper connections with their dogs by teaching the fundamentals of dog psychology, as well as addressing behavioural issues such as aggression, separation anxiety, and excessive barking in a kind, supportive manner.

We believe in results-orientated, humane practices that foster long-term, positive relationships between dogs and their owners.

Clare Dog Training Ireland provides ongoing support and guidance to ensure that every dog thrives in a loving, respectful environment, while owners gain the confidence and tools to foster a fulfilling, balanced relationship with their dogs.
