Legal status varies by jurisdiction — a breed can be restricted in one country and unrestricted or banned in
another (Japanese Tosa, for example, is restricted with a muzzle/lead requirement in the Republic of Ireland,
but fully prohibited in the UK). The "Browse by Legal Status" cards above give a quick at-a-glance flag. Where
breed-specific legal controls apply, expanding that breed's profile shows the full jurisdictional breakdown
across the Republic of Ireland, England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Legal status is based on
breed type (physical characteristics), not the name on
paperwork — see our full Dog Law guide.

guidance, life expectancy, and popularity in Ireland/UK.
Source confidence: where shown, each profile is tagged (A)–(E) for how strong the underlying
evidence is — (A)/(B) are peer-reviewed veterinary/behavioural studies (VetCompass, C-BARQ cohorts), (C) is
breed-club/behaviourist material, (D) is parent-breed extrapolation for crossbreeds, and (E) means no
individual data exists beyond general breed-group characteristics. Hover the flag on any expanded profile
for detail.
A note on crossbreeds and "designer" hybrids: breeds like the Cockapoo, Cavapoo, Labradoodle
and Goldendoodle are not recognised as pedigree breeds by the UK Kennel Club or the Irish Kennel Club — they
have no fixed breed standard and no official "group." These crosses aren't captured in Kennel Club
registration figures, but some population-level veterinary and owner-survey evidence does exist (VetCompass,
Dogs Trust National Dog Survey, RVC C-BARQ studies) — findings can't be applied uniformly, since parentage,
generation, size and breeding practices vary considerably. Reviewed August 2026.
